What
is Action Science?
In 2001, LandLearn developed 'Science in Schools'
projects in partnership with scientists from two
Department of Primary Industry locations and the
Department of Education and Training Science in
Schools program. The project aimed to focus public
attention on the role of science in the community
and to give students the opportunities
to work alongside scientists in their workplaces
and in the classrooms. Curriculum resources, classroom
and fieldwork activities developed for the project
are available here for teachers to download.
Contact the LandLearn team if you require further
information.
Action
Science at Department of Primary Industries (DPI)
Knoxfield comprised two major components:
Career Promotion
The careers promotion component involved the development
of a website featuring IHD scientists and their
work. LandLearn already has a website called 'The
Careers File',
based on profiles of people working in a diverse
range of careers in the natural resource management,
agriculture, horticulture, and food related industries.
The DPI careers feature is attached to this site,
so students from surrounding schools and from
across the state can log on to find out about
science career opportunities, using the attached
activity sheets and additional resources.

Students
working with Scientists
The second component of the pilot project
involved grade six classes from selected schools
visiting the institute to tour the site, talk
to a number of scientists about their different
fields of expertise and to work with two scientists
involved work in Entomology and Plant Pathology.
These interactive sessions introduced the students
to the Institute's insect/ entomology library
and engaged them in simple diagnostic techniques
of plant diseases. They learned techniques
of trapping and identification of insect species
which they can apply in the school grounds or
local habitats.
The
Action Science worksheets are available for teachers
to use with their classes:
