This student activity uses the export pie graphs found at Food and fibre products - Where does the food go?

Materials required

» Photocopied blank outline map of the world (a projection with Australia and Asia at centre is best)
» Atlas
» Coloured pencils
1. Look at the pie graph showing top 10 countries for Victorian food exports.
 
a) Locate each of the countries on the world map outline. Shade them the same colour as shown on the pie graph and label each country with its name.
b) Devise a scale to show the value of the exports to each country from Victoria, perhaps using an arrow divided into different widths representing the value of exports to each country.
c) Which region of the world receives most of Victoria's food exports? Suggest reasons for this.
d) What do you know about this region which could mean continued growth for Victoria's food exports? Discuss in groups then develop a concept map of ideas from the whole class.
e) The value of exports increased most in 1999/2000 to which country? Suggest reasons and discuss what this might mean for the future of Victoria's food exports to this region.
   
2. Further research
 
a) 12 % of all food exports to one particular country is rock lobster. Which country do you think it is? Why?
b) Victoria's share of Australia's confectionary exports is 70% and one Asian nation buys over one quarter of that. Which country do you think it is? Check your response at www.food.vic.gov.au .
