Broken Catchment:

a population of approximately 200,000 people; |

covers a region of 24,300 square kilometres, representing about
10.5% of Victoria's total area; |

land
is used for farming, forestry and fisheries. Examples include:
dairying, livestock (meat -beef, sheep, pigs and poultry), orcharding,
hay, grain, seeds, timber, wool, horses, tomatoes and vegetables,
vineyards, aquaculture and many small but growing industries.

Broken Catchment Management Authority:

aims
to improve the region's social wellbeing, environmental quality
and productive capacity in a sustainable manner; |

is
working to ensure land and water resources are protected and
enhanced. In partnership with other agencies such as water authorities
and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, develops
strategies and implements on-ground works in an integrated management
approach; |
| » |
incorporates community views through three community-based Implementation
Committees for Upper, Mid and Lower Catchment regions addressing
environmental issues. |
Priority
issues are: salinity; water quality; river and floodplain management;
pest plants and animals; declining biodiversity; soil acidity and
sodicity and other non-environmental issues.
