Teaching
sustainability through Landcare successful teacher
professional development
Strong partnerships were developed between teachers
and education programs at a full-day professional
development workshop held in Wangaratta during
August.
Thirty
six enthusiastic teachers attended the session
called Teaching Sustainability through Landcare.
The workshop aimed to demonstrate how the concepts
of sustainability are easily integrated into schools'
curriculum through hands-on, environmental education.
Teachers
were treated to a series of interactive workshops
on a range of themes presented by LandLearn and
the State Landcare Centre. Supporting information
and resources linked to the theme of sustainability
and community partnerships were available from
a variety of organisations - Salinity Management,
Waterwatch, Greening Australia, Ovens Landcare
Network. A photographic presentation of work underway
at Whitfield Primary School provided a 'real'
example of student action.
Feedback
about the day was extremely positive with teachers
enjoying exploring different ways of involving
their students in environmental education in a
fun hands-on way.
