Comparing Apples and Earth

This is a great way to encourage students to visualise the precious resource that we rely on for all our food and fibre production. Students can see just how much of the Earth's surface is available for growing food for a world of people and understand the importance of sustainable soil management.

VELS Domains and (Levels): Geography (4,5) and Science (3,4).

Duration & Setting: 20 minutes in the classroom or food technology room.

Biodiversity Up Close - an audit of biodiversity in the school ground and bushland areas

This is an enjoyable way of encouraging students to get 'Up Close' to the living things in their schoolground, backyard, local parkland or farm and discover the amazing diversity living there.

Biodiversity Up Close is a rigorous and user friendly biodiversity assessment tool that teachers can use with their students. The tool provides snapshots of the quality of biodiversity over time to encourage long term and short term improvements, and supports the Biodiversity Module of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative - Victoria (AuSSI Vic).

VELS Domains and (Levels): Civics and Citizenship (3,5,6), Geography (3,4,5,6), Science (3,4,5,6)

Duration & Setting: 2 hours up to a semester of work in the classroom and schoolgrounds.

Plant Buddies

Plant Buddies is a favourite activity. Adults and students really enjoy learning about the interactions in the garden and it is always a pleasure to introduce people to new plants and different ways of using both them and more familiar plants.

This activity will help students explore some of the more common companion plants, the relationships they have with each other and with some insects.

VELS Domains and (Levels): Humanities (3), Science (3,4,5), Interpersonal Development (3,4), Thinking Processes (3,4,5) and Communication (4,5).

Duration & Setting: 1.5 hours in the classroom or schoolgrounds.
