Did you know?

cow
  • A cow emits about 600 litres of methane gas every day. That is enough to fill up 40 (rather stinky) party balloons.
  • Global Warming is expected to increase temperatures in Australia by 2 degrees celsius by the year 2050. This is expected to be accompanied by an increase in both droughts and extreme storms.
  • Australians use approximately four times more energy per person than the world average.
  • Australia's rate of food self sufficiency is 176%. We produce nearly twice the amount of food required to feed all Australians. A lack of food for our population is a relatively low risk, even given climate change.

Career Profile
Inside 60 seconds with Zita, Dairy Extension Officer/Climate Change Risk, DPI Echuca.
Kieran, Grape Industry Development Officer, Box Hill DPI

LandLearn: What is the favourite thing about your job with DPI?
Zita: Being in the graduate program, my favourite thing was the opportunity to work in four different DPI locations in 2 years. This gave me a chance to work with a range of people involved in dairy and climate extension work in different regions around Victoria. Being a part of the Farm Services Victoria Climate Change Team and the Dairy Team is great as I can be involved in two really interesting work areas.

LandLearn: What are your most enjoyable days at work?
Zita:My most enjoyable days are out in the field; talking to farmers and helping other extension staff facilitate field days and information sessions.

LandLearn: What are your least enjoyable days at work?
Zita: I don't think I've been in the position long enough to experience anything I don't like yet!

LandLearn: What has been your most embarrassing moment at work?
Zita: I can't recall a specific embarrassing moment but I do ask a lot of silly questions and tend to have a few blonde moments.

LandLearn: What steps did you take to get to your current position?
Zita: Participating in a student exchange program to Canada in my third year at university formed the beginning of my knowledge and interest in dairy. I have always had an interest in the environment and agriculture and a graduate position with the DPI in Dairy Extension and Climate Change seemed to be the perfect combination to suit my background and work interests.

LandLearn: Zita, thanks for going inside 60 with LandLearn.
