- Determine which factors they value when making food choices.
Background notes for teachers
When making choices about food we are faced with numerous factors to consider? However, even behind the simple question of 'Do I feel like eating an apple or a banana today' is a myriad of other questions. Where will I buy my apple from? Where was it grown? Under what conditions? By whom? How much will it cost?
The apple that you end up buying will therefore often reflect your values. Do you value organically grown food over price? Do you value the convenience of buying at a supermarket over buying at a farmers' market? Do you value the less processed products with less packaging?
This activity introduces students to some of the values that are connected with food and food production and allows them to assess which values are the most important to them as consumers.
