Wheat and measurement - teacher notes
  link: print version

The Wheat and Measurement activity can be used for both Primary and Secondary levels. At Primary level it can be used to introduce Area, measuring weights, place value, data collection and analysis. At Secondary level can also be used in Maths/Science area to demonstrate ratios and expressing large numbers in standard form. (refer to Extension work)

Other activities:
» Investigate how number of grains in a kilogram of wheat compare to other grains, for example rice.
» Use photographs in the book 'Grain Harvest Equipment' by S Jackson (see resources) as clues to list equipment used on a wheat farm.
» What other equipment would be needed?
» Investigate safety features of this equipment.

Sample solutions for student worksheets questions 2 - 5:

Estimate of grains in 10cm square
Weight of grains in 10 cm square (g)
Number of grains in 10 cm square

Variety of answers

Between 20g and 25g depending on density of grain Between 600 and 700 grains. Depending on size of wheat grain.

For question 6:
20g of wheat equates to 600 grains
(x5) (x5)
100g of wheat equates to 3000 grains
(x10) (x10)
1000g of wheat equates to 30,000 grains
(1kg)

Approximately 30,000 grains in 1kg of wheat (in standard form 3 x 10(squared) grains in 1kg of wheat)

Extension work:
Based on the work done in this activity, approximate how many grains the 28 tonne field bin could hold? (Note: 1000kg = 1 tonne)

1kg of wheat equates to 30,000 grains
(x1000) (x1000)
1 tonne of wheat equates to 30,000,000 grains
(x28) (x28)
28 tonnes of wheat equates to 840,000,000 grains

Approximately eight hundred and forty million (840,000,000) grains in the 28 tonne field bin. Written in standard form, approximately 8.4 x 10(to the power of 8) grains in the 28 tonne field bin.
