The Shepparton Irrigation Region - a natural food bowl
  link: print version

Using the map of the Shepparton Irrigation Region (available below), complete the following activities:

» Produce an overlay map to mark in and label the main roads and railways in the region. Mark at the edge of the overlay map the directions and distance to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. On the overlay label the four rivers shown on the map and the lake in the south.
» Draw a map of Victoria to show the location of the Shepparton Irrigation Region. Mark in the Goulburn River and the water storages which supply the Shepparton Irrigation Region.
» Using an atlas, identify the features which have contributed to the region being a "natural food bowl".
» Research the history of irrigation in the region.
» Identify the industries and enterprises represented by the symbols to compile a key for the map. Classify the industries in different ways, eg. primary, secondary and tertiary.
» Work in pairs to research one of the industries represented on the map, then present a poster and verbal report to the class.
» Produce a similar map for other regions of Victoria or Australia. For example, use the Catchment Management Authority region in which the school is located.
» Identify major food processors located in the region. Visit a local supermarket; find and name different products grown in the region and processed by food companies based there.
» Investigate the effects of the current water shortages in the state or areas of Victoria, and the responses of different enterprises. Collect media items about the irrigation water issue; investigate different aspects of the issue in the context of "the food bowl" and its significance in the state economy.
» Transport is an important industry in Shepparton. List reasons for this.
» Students and teachers are invited to send in examples of students' work for publication on the LandLearn website or in the newsletter
