Craig
undertakes map production, GIS analysis and data collection
and management.

is responsible for managing several people at work and

BACKGROUND:
Grew up where?
Craig
grew up in Tanunda, Barossa Valley, South Australia.

studied:
Tertiary /post secondary:
Craig attained qualifications in Cartography in USA
(Associate Diploma of Applied Science), as well as a
Bachelor of Applied Science in Land Information (Cartography)
at RMIT.
Secondary:
Craig's
goal in secondary school was to be an engineer, however
he became interested in land information instead. The
subjects that he completed at school included Maths
I and II, Chemistry, Physics and Geography.
Work
experience:
During secondary school Craig undertook work experience
with a Graphic Designer and an Aircraft Maintenance
Engineer. Craig has also spent some time working as
a Multimedia Developer and two years in the GIS department
at DNRE.
OPPORTUNITIES:
Further study:
Several
short seminars relevant to his role at work.
Learning
on job, new skills, etc.
Craig
believes he is always learning on the job, especially
problem solving aspects.
Travel,
etc.
During Craig's time at work he has been to several conferences
(Mapping Sciences Institute) and ESKI in San Diego,
USA
ADVICE TO STUDENTS NOW:
students up to Year 10
Craig
suggests that students enjoy school while you can.
VCE students
Craig believes that you don't have to study chemistry
and physics at VCE level for this type of work. However
he believes that Geography, Maths and computer skills
are all important.
Tertiary
students
Craig advises that tertiary students must understand
the principles of map projection and GIS. He believes
that anybody can use GIS.
OTHER:
Comments, thoughts, suggestions.
Craig believes that to pursue a career in GIS then people
should have an interest in Graphic Design, be as accurate
as possible and have good interpersonal skills.
