Glossary
   

Accountant - Somebody who is responsible for maintaining and checking the financial (money) records of an individual or company. 
Agriculture - Managing the growth of plants and animals for human use, this includes growing and harvesting crops, breeding and raising livestock, dairying, and forestry. 

Agronomist - Somebody who studies the science of soils and plants, this includes soil management, land use and the growing of crops 

Audit - A regular check that is carried out to ensure that things are being done correctly 

Bio-indicator - An organisms that is sensitive to changes in the environment around them and is therefore useful in indicating the presence of pollutants

Chemist - A scientist who works with and performs tests involving chemicals 

Conferences - A meeting for exchanging information and opinions 

Consultant - Somebody who provides advice or services in their area of expertise 

Curate - To manage a collection of something, such as in a museum, gallery, laboratory 

Curriculum Vitae (CV) - A summary of a persons educational qualifications and experience. A Curriculum Vitae is needed when applying for work.

Diagnosis - To identify the cause of an illness or problem. 

Ecologist - Somebody who studies the relationships between living organisms and the environment they live in.

Ecosystem - A community of organisms and the environment in which they live 

Employee - Somebody who is paid by an individual or business to do work

Employer - A person or business that hires and pays one or more workers 

Entomology - The study of insects 

Expertise - The skills and knowledge of somebody who is an expert in something 

Extension -One to one communication between scientists and farmers 

Graduate - Somebody who has completed a diploma or degree course 

Genetic Engineering - Changing the genetic material of people, animals and plants, using technological methods. This process is used to treat disease, alter plant and animal characteristics and create useful biological products such as insulin 

Harvest - The crops that are gathered during a particular season 

Hazards - A risk or source of danger 

Horticulture - The science of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and trees. 

Human Resources - The field of business that involves employing new people and managing the people that work for the company 

Induction - The process of starting somebody into a new job. This include showing them around the company, introducing them to the people that work there and helping them settle in to their new job. 

Industry - Any production or manufacturing business 

Information Technology - The use of technology such as computers, electronics, and telecommunications to communicate information 

Invertebrate - Animals that do not have a backbone 

Macro-invertebrates - Animals that do not have a backbone and can be seen with the naked eye 

Marketing - Presenting products or services to potential customers in way a that will encourage them to buy 

Nematodes - Non-segmented, microscopic worm like organisms that feed on plants, animals and even humans 

Nematology - The study of Nematodes 

Occupational Health and Safety - Understanding and being aware of possible hazards in the work place and preventing them before they occur 

Orchardist - Somebody who owns and manages an orchard (an area of land used to grow fruit or nut trees) 

Organism - a living thing such as a plant, animal, or bacteria 

Payroll - a list of employees and the pay they receive 

PhD - stands for Doctor of Philosophy - The highest level of a university degree that can be obtained 

Plant Pathologist - A scientist who studies the cause of diseases in plants

Plant propagation - To multiply or reproduce plants 

Prerequisite - What results or experience is needed to be accepted into a course

Pome Fruit - A fleshy fruit which has seeds but no stone such as apples, pears, nashi-fruit 

Post-harvest handling - The way in which fruit and vegetables are washed and stored after they are picked 

Profitable - Money that is made from a business activity 

Promotion - To advertise and inform people about events, products and information that may be useful to them 

Public Relations - Promoting a good image of a business to their customers 

Quarantine - Enforced isolation of people, animals or plants that may have been exposed to an infectious disease 

Recruitment - The process of starting a new job 

Rehabilitation - The process of becoming well and healthy again after being ill.

Research - Study or investigation to find out useful facts and information about a topic 

Retailer - Somebody who sells products or services 

Scholarship - An amount of money that is awarded to a student to help them with living expenses, study or travel. 

Species - A group of animals that have the same characteristics 

Staff - The people who work for a company 

Taxonomy - Identifying and naming plants or animals

Techniques - A particular method of doing something 

Terrestrial - Animals and plants that live on land 

Toxicology - The study of poisons and their effect on the human body

Trade Unions - An organisation of workers that is set up to ensure that its members have good wages, benefits, working hours and conditions. 

Turf - A dense thick even cover of grass 

Viticulture - The study of planting and growing grapevines for winemaking 

Zoology - The scientific study of animals and all aspects of animal life
